EPISODE X/CHAPTER 3: BEDROOM

For artmonte-carlo, Agatha invites artists Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė to materialise Agatha’s body and bedroom in form of scent and installation. The booth design will follow the usual Oslo10 programme structured according to an Episode format and present an exhibition titled EPISODE X/CHAPTER 3: BEDROOM. The exhibition will simultaneously be a continuation of the projects Agatha 1.2.0.1 and Agatha 1.2.0.2 developed by Gawęda and Kulbokaitė and conceived of in two chapters in separate location in Berlin (04.2015) and in the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris as part of Co-Workers– Network as Artist exhibition (11.2015 - 01.16). Agatha 1.2.0.1 and Agatha 1.2.0.2 developed an imagined hybrid body and a transitional space inhabited by Agatha Valkyrie Ice, shaped by an interest in the possibility of materializing virtual entity and constructing corporeality/ies for a virtual being. These projects imagined Agatha’s character in three distinct spaces: Center project space, a Hilton hotel room and within an established art institution, and were simultaneously a presentation of scents developed with the support of International Flavours and Fragrances, New York (IFF Inc.), artist Clemence de La Tour du Pin and Adrien Figeac (Coty Inc). Here Gawęda and Kulbokaitė asked themselves how one can think of architecture and the body without conforming to stereotypes of what natural is so as to move beyond the presumption that subjectivity and dwelling exist in a relation of complementarity, either as a relation of containment or as a relation of expression.

EPISODE X/CHAPTER 3: BEDROOM further examines the themes address in the previous chapters of Agatha 1.2.0.1 and Agatha 1.2.0.2 pushing forward the understanding of the materials and concepts addressed, which become a setting for the emergence of non-linear narration. Similarly EPISODE X/CHAPTER 3: BEDROOM is an endeavour to manifest a physical presence of that which is virtual in its origin and thus the role of the scent was to create a volatile passage between the virtual dimension and the physical body. The installation directs the view on the space as something other than the containment or protection of subjects, beyond binarization, confining subjectivity and signification. Through the use of scent the artists want to modify the space as a surface, a permeable space of memory, imagination and affect, imagining it as a primary form of habitation that could potentially redefine the relationship between inside/outside, virtual/real, female/male, etc. EPISODE X/CHAPTER 3: BEDROOM will be conceived as a deconstructed bedroom interior comprising of a fragrant sculptural installation enveloping 25sqm booth. The exhibition will seek to present new ways to experience and understand the site of sleep and pleasure. The materials used will hint towards the previously used aesthetics of Agatha 1.2.0.1 at Hilton. Gawęda and Kulbokaitė will use a variety of materials to create a sculptural installation, suggesting a space in transition parallel to that of the art fair. The artists will contrast tactile surfaces to the harsh lighting of the fair interior to expose the private to the public and once again challenge the binaries. The installation will attain a coherent look and feel through the use of the scent titled LUZ (developed in collaboration with IFF Inc.), an odour that is built around an aroma of Red Bull energy drink head space to symbolize the virtual energy that is always moving. The metallic aroma of the scent will converse with the imagery of the virtual character Lightning from the computer game Final Fantasy XIII that will be used throughout EPISODE X/CHAPTER 3: BEDROOM.
